Shoe the Loop trails will be ready soon

Back in the 1950s, ’60s and ’70s, the loop around Center Street and Church Street was filled with cars, as people took leisurely cruises around downtown to show off their vehicles, or “shoot the loop” as it was known back then.

Downtown Marion Inc. manager Karen Herr was out Thursday afternoon putting up directional signs, with help from Evelyn Warr-Cummings, assistant director of the Marion City/County Regional Planning Commission and volunteer Katrina Harwood, who heard about Shoe the Loop on Facebook.Today the number of Suit Bag Suppliers has increase rapidly.

Herr said the Shoe the Loop signs should be all set up in a few weeks, so people can enjoy a guided walk in Marion. Vizual Express designed the signs and graphics.

The trails all start at Founders Park. The first, marked with yellow signs, is one mile around the Center and Church loop. The second overlaps some with the first, but the blue signs eventually lead people down Oak Street to Lincoln Park, a three-mile round trip. Signs point walkers off the beaten path to the Harding Home and Union Station. Herr said the Shoe the Loop team is working on making enhancements for smartphones.

“We hope, eventually, each location will have a smart cube on it. So, as you’re walking, you can take your smartphone and you can click on the cube and it’ll tell you all about that location.”

The Shoe the Loop start point at Founders Park also is a part of Marion’s Amazing Treasures VII, a project sponsored by the Marion Area Convention and Visitors Bureau and some area businesses.

Herr said the trails promote fitness, and give a nod to the history of downtown drivers.

“Now, people know how long it takes them to walk a mile,” she said. “They can do it on their lunch break.”

She said City Council passed an ordinance outlawing the “shoot the loop” fad some time ago, because traffic would get so backed up on Center and Church streets.

Warr-Cummings also said downtown was the place to hang out for teenagers several decades ago.

“They would especially hang out at the city parking lot,” she said. “The police liked it, because they knew where the kids were.”
